Korrespondenser
2009, 12 white fabric banners, 150 x 212 cm, Eternal Return / Magasinet, Falun Sweden
"Korrespondenser" is a site specific work for the group exhibition and pedagogical project "Eternal Return" in Falun, where young artists, architects and designers from the region were invited to return and show what they work with today. The collaborative project, between curator Kajsa Pontén, the cultural association Magasinet and Falun Municipality, took place during one week in October and was visited by 3000 secondary- and highschool students, and 550 other visitors. My piece is based on a displacement between public and private communications and spaces. Quotes from love letters by Selma Lagerlöf to her mistress and friend Sophie Elkan are painted on textile banners corresponding to book sheets. The intimate and passionate messages, written between 1894 and 1904, are installed along the façade towards the railway station, and along the same façade inside the exhibition space. Selma Lagerlöf spent 40 years of her radical and nomadic life in Falun, a cultural heritage which the city has not made the most of. While working on the piece Iwas inspired by Selma's questioning of her contemporary heteronormative and patriarchal society through her way of life, and her courageous exposure and exploration of passionate emotions. I also found interesting the geographic and thematic proximity to the train station, and notions such as traveling, distance, displacement, belonging and identity.
